Shine bright like a diamond
I have never been a fan of statement pieces when it comes to jewelry. Well, maybe except for those few years when I was a teenager and stacking up rings on each finger was all the rage. Until I got stuck behind a door handle in a hurry and almost tore my finger off. That was the end of it LOL. After that I didn’t wear jewelry for years.
Geraldine Saglio of French Vogue sparked my interested for dainty, delicate jewelry. Or bracelets, to be more exact. I spotted a street style picture of her online in 2011 and loved the fine silver bracelet in combination with the knitted sweater she was wearing. I was able to find out that it was from Tifanny & Co, Elsa Peretti’s Diamonds by the Yard collection. I’ve mentioned that I bought it in 2011 to celebrate my first job and how happy it made me. And then, I lost it. It’s been two years and I’m still upset about it. I know, it’s just a simple silver bracelet with a small diamond. But I loved how delicate and understated it was. It was also such a nice reminder of my accomplishments thus far. I own the necklace as well, but it’s not the same.
I had several moments the past couple of years where I was already at the counter but couldn’t bite the bullet. The current pricing is ridiculous. And yet, I won’t settle for anything else. I’m not opposed to buying things second hand but in the case of this bracelet, it doesn’t make a big difference, in terms of pricing. So I’d rather have the experience of buying in store. If only I could make up my mind…
Do you think I’m crazy for considering this bracelet once again? Have you ever purchased the same thing twice after you lost it the first time?
I don’t think you are clcrazy. It meant a lot to you, you’ve thought about it for 2 years. From an objective point of view, it doesn’t seem like you will regret buying another one, only that you will always kick yourself for losing the first one. If you get another, it will still remind you of the same things, with an added reminder of how much you can love jewellery and what it means to you, and to be extra extra careful. Go for it! Xx
Thanks Rachael! I guess it’s not just a temporary obsession given that I’ve been thinking about it for two years. I lost it in such a dumb way, that surely won’t happen again if I take the plunge.
I have wanted it ever since you first showed it on the blog and I think you should get it. You have such a great sense of your own style and that bracelet would fit perfectly in your wardrobe – again 😊
Thanks, Kirsten. You’re far too kind. It would definitely fit in. Although I’m sure most delicate jewelry would. But I really like the look of this particular bracelet.
I think if you still want it in these circumstances, you definitely won’t regret replacing it! I have the Diamonds by the Yard solitaire necklace in gold as a law school graduation gift and it is pretty much priceless to me, and in the very unfortunate and hopefully will never come to pass event that I lose it, I think I’d also want to replace it (even if both back when it was purchased and now the price is… really substantial and maybe not “worth” it by some objective standards).
Oh, I didn’t know you own the gold necklace! I think you’re right. I won’t regret spending the money on a replacement. It’s not just about the bracelet, or in your case, a necklace, but more about the thoughts behind it.
I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve lost something, only to repurchase it but… when my Charlotte Olympia kitty flats were on their final legs, I did get a second pair – and I’m glad i did.
If you’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years now, I’d say bite the bullet. No harm in seeing if you can find it second hand either; The Real Real or Vestiare Collective might have something? x
I actually have an alarm set on Vestiaire Collective but no luck so far. Whenever a new bracelet shows up, the price isn’t much different from the original retail price so then I’d rather buy one new. Ebay isn’t really an option because most sellers don’t ship to the Netherlands and there’s no check whether or not it’s genuine. Signed up for the Real Real btw 🙂
Do you wear the necklace often? maybe you could loop that and wear it as a bracelet or even have it turned into two bracelets?
Personally if I lost something I would feel that I was meant to lose it. I’m not really one of those people that believes everything happens for a reason but I do believe it about losing things….maybe its to make myself feel better about losing it!
I haven’t worn it very often lately because I need to get it cleaned (Tiffany&Co is around the corner from where I work). It did cross my mind but the necklace was a gift from my grandparents who have both passed away in recent years. So I would feel bad about it.
“And yet, I won’t settle for anything else.” – I think that pretty much means you’ve made up your mind. You know you like the item and yes pricing changes and it does make one cringe to think of how much more expensive things are getting, but ultimately, if you know it’ll make you happy, then do it. There’s no shame in getting the same thing again. If anything, it may make the newer item more precious to you, especially knowing you were willing to pay more for it again.
Thanks Jen! That sounds like solid advice. My husband practically said the same thing, only about one of my bags that might need to be replaced in the future. Those darn price increases however make the decision so hard. I know I’ll be getting part of my taxes back before June 1st. So that would be as good a time as any.
I hope you give an update when you have decided what to do! Have you talked to anyone at Tiffany’s (perhaps tell them your story of why you’re purchasing)–you never know, perhaps a kind manager might give you a break? (idk if this has actually happened.)
Conversely, would a custom-made bracelet be out of the question, if the Tiffany’s one is now beyond the budget? Not sure what prices are like in your area, however.
I will probably make a mention of it if I repurchase. You never know! But Dutch people aren’t that flexible when it comes to money haha. Fortunately it’s not beyond budget but I feel kind of silly also paying for that price increase. I’ll definitely let you guys know what I decide to do.
Another vote for replacing the bracelet (and I also agree with you on buying new vs. secondhand, considering the minor discount you could glean from a secondhand purchase).
Out of curiosity, were you wearing the bracelet when it went missing? On one hand, it’s so nice that the delicate bracelet is nearly weightless… but on the other hand, that makes it so much easier to lose track of. I wonder if Tiffany could do anything to prevent the same issue – swapping out for a different clasp style, or removing some links to make the bracelet a bit smaller, etc.
No, I wasn’t wearing it. It was just me being super careless (which I normally never am). I was in a hurry and threw the pouch with the bracelet in my bag thinking I would put in on later. It must have gotten out of the pouch and maybe stuck between the wires of my earphones which I take out of my bag several times a day 🙁
Hi Jessica,
Longtime blog reader. Hope you’re well.
Can I ask what the size is of the diamond on your bracelet? Have always loved Elsa Peretti’s designs – so beautiful but subtle. I’ve contemplated buying a bracelet or necklace in the last few years, but Tiffany pricing deterred me. Considered buying a dupe from another jeweler – but I think I’ve decided I don’t really want to settle and it’ll be my treat to myself for staying sane during this pandemic.
Hi, I don’t know if this comment will reach you but I’m sorry for the late response. I think it was the smallest size, 0.03 carat. Tiffany prices have gone up so much these past few years, it’s crazy! It’s a classic design so I don’t think it would be considered as buying a dupe if you were to purchase from another jeweller. But I get your point of view as well. Curious to know if you have made a decision 🙂

Very interesting Jean-François, as usual.I’m glad you wrote “This post is the first of a series of posts related to Big Data”. It’s a very hot topic, but it’s hard to get information as to what this is really, since lots of people use it only as a buzzword…Bonjour Jean-Francois,very nice article, just found it. And the Top 3 predictions now at a very different spotlight, with half of 2014 already gone. Number 2 definitely true (as for all High-End players, not only for the US-giants). Number 3 surely also a wish of the Webtrends-CEO, but still not realized. This will get critical…Thanks,Ralf.PS: By the way: GAP to me is very welcome in the market, since their pricing is so high and their commission structure for the agencies (50% commission of 150.000 Dollar fixed price) so un-transparent to end-users, that lots of users turn away from GAP after using GA before.
