On (not so) reliable brands
I remember a time when I was lusting after every piece created by Isabel Marant. Clearly I didn’t have the means to fund an entire collection, but I carefully selected the pieces that worked for me. I spent days on Ebay trying to find a jacket or coat I missed out on (I should probably write a post on my IM coat collection, haha). But then, a few years back when the brand gained popularity, prices started to rise, designs became less timeless and more on trend and it became harder to find myself in her aesthetic. Regarding the prices, I will still make the occasional exception though. I’m more than willing to spend a little extra on a well constructed coat for instance, but I would never pay $500 for a simple, semi-shear dress. Trust me when I say that the range in quality can be quite shocking. And it’s very hard sometimes to tell which piece of clothing will withstand the test of time.
Acne Studios used to be another favourite, especially the knitwear. I’m glad I was able to get my hands on a few beautiful sweaters and cardigans before a lot of their clothes and shoes became insanely expensive and a little too extravagant for my taste. Without these two brands to fall back on, I seem to be reaching more and more for high street fashion because I no longer know where to shop. But even the quality of high street brands such as Zara has declined over the years, albeit in slow motion. I do have positive experiences with brands such as Weekday and COS, which is why I mention them on a regular basis. And sure, there are some other brands that drew my attention over the years, like A.P.C., but most of their clothes aren’t very flattering on my curvier figure. I’m also very interested in almost everything made by Everlane. But unfortunately they don’t ship to the Netherlands and I read a couple of bad reviews about the third party shipping service they recommend. So unless they’re going to start shipping their stuff internationally, I’ll just have to keep drooling from afar.
It sucks that I can no longer rely on my favourite brands. I’m looking for items that I can wear for a couple of years a least, preferably longer and sometimes it just seems to be hit or miss regardless the price range. I’m not sure where I’m going with this rant, because I obviously don’t have a solution. But let’s just say I’m open to brands that are actually worth investing in. So hit me up with your recommendations!
Tell me, do you have any go-to brands or designers and did you notice any changes in quality over time?
When it comes to footwear I swear by Billi Bi. Great quality, great fit and I just love the design. Oh, and I think it’s great that their production is in Europe.
But sadly I agree with you when it comes to Zara. The quality isn’t what it used to be and the service is awful. I still give them a chance now and then, but only when I’ve had the chance to really look closer at the garment and examine it.
And btw, I really like your blog! I only found it recently, but I’ve read all of it and it is great.
Thanks Kirsten, you’re too kind! I’ve never heard of Billi Bi, but I will definitely check it out. With each new Zara look book I’m tempted to take a look in their stores. But most of the time I leave utterly disappointed.
Your experience with Isabel Marant funnily enough mirrors my own, except that I was never bold enough to spend over $400 on an item only to have to pay additional tax when it entered the country – when I was still living in NZ that is. Now, it’s exactly as you say, too trend driven and the bator jackets and pea coats I’d longed for no longer seem to play a central role in her collections.
Which third party service does Everlane recommend? I use Shipito, and have done so for over three years without any issues.
I like COS, I think the quality of the items I have bought from there has been excellent compared to other high street stores. Topshop make surprisingly good quality leather shoes. Locally, I quite like Country Road as I find the quality is pretty good. And J Crew for the odd thing but they are ridiculously expensive these days.
HopShopGo, but like I said, I read some bad reviews so I’ll look into Shipito. Then I only need some advice on which sizes to get :s
Ik heb zelf wat kleding van het merk Whistles en de kwaliteit bevalt me goed! Is verkrijgbaar bij de Bijenkorf 🙂
Ah thanks voor de tip, ik ga het checken!
I know what you mean about brands getting popular and then slowly losing quality over time. Lululemon was a fantastic company for yoga gear, but when they got too big and outsourced the manufacturing and it’s been a long slide down since then.
I wish I had a go to brand that I could count on to fit me and last no matter what. Trying to find clothes that meet that description has lead to a series of disappointments. I’m very wary of buying things online without trying them on first. I like 7 For All Mankind for jeans, because they fit me alright through the hips and rear, but I have yet to find a go to for tops 🙁 If you find any brands I’d love to hear about them!
Thanks for your comment, Cassie! I appreciate it. It’s such a shame really, I’ve read the same thing about Lululemon.
I don’t know maybe I’m just too picky sometimes. And the brands that I do like are not suited for my body type. I love A.P.C. and their aesthetic, but I’m just too curvy, COS is a beautiful brand but mostly for tall skinny Swedes, haha. So I’m afraid the search continues…
Love your blog! Just found it and i’m reading everything! I run an online store that focuses on organic & ethical brands with high quality, and I’m always so happy to find fashion bloggers that has sustainability in mind (in one way or another). The simple and lasting style of yours is just amazing.
For a great basic brand, I would try out Kowtow if I were you, an organic & fair-trade brand from New Zeeland. They do have a lot of oversized products (guessing thats not for you!), but for the more close fitting items you can find truly timeless pieces in great quality. For example, I myself love their V Tee, a classic tee that I think i’ve washed like a 100 times – and it still looks brand new (and that goes for the white one as well..).
And, being from Sweden, I so agree: what happened with Acne? Their new line of bags is just.. Awful. Thank god that the woollen scarf is still available!
Thanks Pernilla, I appreciate it! It’s still a work in progress; I can always do better. But it can be hard to let go of some of the less sustainable brands that I have been buying for years. I will definitely check Kowtow. And those bags make me cry, haha.
