• I’m a big fan of plants but I have also rekindled my love for flowers as of late. It feels like a bit of a splurge but what’s life without small luxuries? Fresh colourful flowers instantly brighten up the room and I love going to the market on a Saturday afternoon anyway (do I get extra cool girl points for the straw bag btw?)
  • I’ve been switching between scents the last couple of days. Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules remains my all-time favourite and it’s the only scent I wear to work as it’s very subtle. But for summer, on my days off, I also enjoy the likes of Byredo’s Black Saffron and Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Seasalt. The latter very reminiscent of warm days at the beach.
  • Can you believe I’m wearing a dress? I saw this particular wrap dress online and while I normally don’t wear a lot of prints, I was instantly sold when I tried it on. I mean, look at my waist! The fit of the dress is extremely flattering and the length is absolutely perfect. Something I’m not used to being only 5′ 4″ tall.
  • A rare selfie. My last haircut was over six months ago just before Christmas and those split ends are not a good look. So it’s time to book a new appointment. I usually give my hairdresser free rein and am pretty happy with whatever she does but as I’m getting older, I’m also starting to become more particular. For now, I’m leaning towards a bob just above the shoulder which would be perfect for summer. Although sometimes I do miss my straight fringe, hm…

Ps. I don’t post a lot of pictures on Instagram but I do use the Instagram stories feature if you’re interested @daarboven

wardrobe essentials the white shirt

Search on Google for ‘wardrobe essentials’ and you will surely come across a list that mentions the white shirt. I used to own a couple of white shirts, a long time ago. Currently I only own two shirts; a striped one and a navy silk one. The first must be at least eight years old. I rediscovered it after our move and have been wearing it at least once a week. A tucked-in shirt and a pair of jeans combined with loafers. That is what you will find me wearing all through summer when the weather doesn’t allow for t-shirts and sleeveless tops. The only thing that I would like to add to that selection of shirts at the moment, is a classic white shirt.

What I love most about the classic (white) shirt is that it’s versatile and incredibly easy to style. Once you have decided on what type of shirt you are looking for, that is. For summer I particularly like a light and breezy linen shirt but cotton and silk may be more suitable for a work environment. And nothing beats the luxurious feel of silk. Of course, there is also the fit. I personally prefer my shirts straight and slightly oversized so the seam of the shoulder hits the corner of my shoulder bone or just a few millimeters over it so it balances out my silhouette. For a casual look I’ll roll up the sleeves. For a more formal look I like to pair it with a blazer.

The options and combinations are endless so I’m having a hard time deciding. All I know is that it needs to be as simple as possible; no flashy buttons, no pockets and definitely no prints or ruffles (what is this trend?). If you have any recommendations for shirts, please share.

MY FAVOURITE PICKS

First of all, excuse the recent absence. Since the big move into our new house, I have been focusing on many things except blogging. Such as our interior which is really coming together, this is the main reason why I haven’t had time to blog, you guys know I like to take my time picking the right paint color, choosing a rug and all the decoration.

We are still on the hunt for a new couch that will go well with our mid-century interior. We are leaning towards this one (which looks a lot nicer in real life). Other than that I started my new job with a much longer commute than before, picked up reading again and kept myself busy with a home garden with all kinds of vegetables. So that left little time for the internet.

Which is fine because the internet, or to be more specific Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest were putting me down the past couple of weeks. I’m actually a pretty confident person 99,9% of the time but for some reason the never ending stream of imagery of beautiful tall and thin women started to get to me. I wasn’t in a good place at the time due to our move and my new job which was very stressful so that may have been the reason. But I knew I needed a time-out when suddenly terms as ‘elegant’ and ‘effortless’ became equivalents to ‘tall’ and ‘thin’ and I reasoned that certain outfits (like the ones above) would have looked amazing on me if only I had that body.

When I went shopping, my expectations didn’t live up to reality. No matter how many different pairs of vintage Levi’s 501 jeans I tried on, they never made me magically look like the next Jeanne Damas or Adenorah. And that’s okay. But it did leave me a bit disappointed. Because I love searching the internet for style inspiration but I do feel that there is a lack of images on platforms such as Instagram or Pinterest that reflect diversity and reality. Although that might depend on your personal style of course. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right direction and that whole French je-ne-sais-quoi aesthetic just isn’t meant for me (more specifically: my body type). But still, it would be nice to find images that cater to your personal style that you can relate to.

Nevertheless, looking back, I’m quite surprised that I, as an adult woman, can be influenced in such a negative way by something as Instagram which I rarely use myself nowadays because I grew tired of trying to maintain my followers after a while (I work in an office four days a week and don’t get home until 7pm. Not a very exciting lifestyle, haha). But I’m not an exception. According to recent British research, Instagram is the most harmful social media network for the mental health of people between 14 and 24 years old. Our feeds filled with photo perfect moments and uber stylish individuals often don’t match with our daily lives and can contribute to social health problems such as depression and a negative body image, which could lead people to more serious issues as criminal conduct and and ending up needing a lawyer for this that you can even get online, you can get redirected here to the right site for this.

What worked for me was to stay away from social media for a while and focus on other things that bring me joy and put everything back into perspective. It was such a relief to get rid of that constant stream of information and to live in the here and now and focus on yourself and the people around you (or your garden hehe) instead of comparing yourself to others and focus on what it is that you don’t have. I’m sure this is all old news to you guys but I just felt the need to share my thoughts, or rather my insecurities, on this subject and tell you that sometimes it’s not so bad to take a step back. Oh and in case you’re wondering, I’m not going anywhere and I will still be blogging.

Does social media ever influence the way you feel about / or look at yourself?

Ah yes, if you have been reading this blog for a while you must know that spring and summer are my most dreaded seasons when it comes to wardrobe planning. However, last year I think I did a good job in regards to planning and purchasing new clothes. My list consisted of three potential purchases but I only ended up with two; a black camisole and a pair of high-waisted white trousers. The latter made me realise that I don’t have to wear jeans all summer, solely out of habit, and that they’re a great alternative for skirts and dresses which I rarely wear.

I did succumb to fast fashion once again (will I ever learn?). I’ve come to realise that I very much prefer to invest in clothes and accessories that I can wear all year round instead of just one season. So summery trousers are not something I’m willing to spend a lot of money on. But, as always, they do need to meet all of my requirements; natural fabrics, machine washable, high-waisted for the illusion of longer legs and preferable wide-legged. We all have our problem areas (even if they’re only visible to ourselves) and mine are my thighs or better said, those darn saddlebags. So I try not to emphasise them when I wear something tucked into my trousers. Straight or wide trousers are my best option.

I tried several options such as these and these but I finally fell for the green trousers below. I have to admit though, I left the tags on because they’re a bit trendy and out there for me personally (you can see me wearing them here) and we have only been blessed with two warm days so far. But if I do keep them, I have my summer wardrobe sorted. I have compiled a few collages of how I would wear them with garments and accessories that I already own. What do you think? Yay or nay?
