5 piece french wardrobe overview 2017

Another year, another overview of my purchases. Albeit an extremely late one. My apologies! There is a lot to catch up on. Although I didn’t write about my acquisitions throughout the year, I still keep a list on my phone which I update on a regular basis. The document also shows lists from previous years so that’s a pretty good reality check whenever I need one. I haven’t been as strict as I used to be and that definitely reflects in my purchases. But let’s see what I bought first before I tell you about my findings and plans for this year. Be warned though, it’s a long post!

The first six months

The beginning of 2017 went by fairly quick and easy. The only thing that I bought was a checkered oversized blazer. I wore it to my first day at my new job with black skinny jeans and a pair of chelsea boots.  It wasn’t until spring that I started to think about work appropriate clothes for summer. Mind you, my work environment is pretty casual but tanktops or camisoles without a blazer or cardigan are not an option. A white linen blouse (similar here) seemed like a good idea. I actually had that on my list last year as well but I couldn’t find the particular cut that I was looking for. Most of them felt too tight on the hips. But this one was a steal for only €10.

The olive green trousers were another addition to my summer wardrobe. I enjoyed wearing the white linen trousers that I bought last year and figured I could rotate between these and the new green ones. Both are clearly a much better option than my usual pair of jeans on hot summer days. I got some many compliments. A woman even stopped me in the streets to ask me where they were from. They looked especially nice with the Castañer espadrilles. Initially, I bought those in navy but returned them and opted for a black pair instead.

As you can see, I mostly splurged on shoes. I tried to be a wise and ethical consumer for a change and traded in my old worn out Stan Smits for a pair of Veja sneakers. I usually don’t pay that amount of money for sneakers but hooray for discount codes (I rarely buy anything full price). The black strappy sandals seemed like a good idea at the time. I wanted something similar as the Maryam Nassir Zadeh Sophie sandals but I couldn’t get them to work. I’m going to give it another try this summer and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll sell them. Tip: buying items that are ‘inspired by’ when you’re actually eyeing the real deal is rarely satisfying. Go for the real deal if you can afford it.

And finally,  I bought three new simple white t-shirts. I go through those so quickly but I wear them pretty much on a daily basis. I get cold all the time so I need to layer up. This one is always tricky; do I buy more expensive, better quality t-shirts for a higher price or a cheaper high street brand? I own a few Isabel Marant t-shirts that are wonderful but they shouldn’t go unseen underneath a sweater. So now I have a pile of ‘nicer’ t-shirts and a few that are cheap but good enough to wear under other pieces of clothing. It works but I would much rather downsize my wardrobe altogether in the near future.

The last six months

To be honest, I can’t recall whether I bought those blue jeans in the last six months or not. I think it was around July, maybe August. Topshop remains my go to brand for jeans. I love that they sell them at different lengths and they fit me so well in the waist. The only downside is that they don’t last as long as I would like them too. Given that I wear black jeans almost every day during fall and winter, I need replacements too often for my liking.

I have a weak spot for coats. Especially when they’re on sale. The black coat looks more expensive than it is and has also gotten me a few compliments. But after I bought it, that long pile coat came online. It’s a bit over the top but I have never worn a coat that warm. I need to transfer three times on my commute to work and the last thing I want, is to be freezing cold. I feel kind of bad for adding two coats to my existing wardrobe even though I got rid of two older ones. There’s simply no excuse other than that I really like them. Might as well be honest about it.

The grey wool H&M Studio blazer is my most worn item of the year. It is simply perfect. I was a bit hesitant at first because it wasn’t exactly cheap, for H&M anyway. But I’m happy that I bought it. It’s a nice touch to my daily work outfits that mostly consist of jeans and sneakers and excellent for layering. I often pair it with the A.P.C. striped t-shirt which I got on sale. Another sale find were the suede foldable flats. Painful or wet feet (it rains a lot here, what can I say), got that covered. Speaking of shoes again, I was also gifted a pair of Reebok sneakers in december.

Findings and conclusion

2017 was definitely the year where I slacked the most ever since I started the 5PFW. My mind was occupied with a new job, a new house, sick pets and the passing of dear family members. I didn’t make a list for each season (6 months) and just bought a few things on a whim. Luckily, most of them were purchases that I still enjoy. But to be honest, I miss the times where I would carefully plan each and every purchase. I’m sure that sounds boring to some of you but it was my way of acquiring things which were normally out of reach, budget-wise. If I look back on the last couple of years, those are the items that I still treasure the most.

On the other hand, as I discussed with Ellya last Saturday, growing older comes with more responsibilities. And those responsibilities cost money. It’s not all fun and games anymore. I would rather invest in my house, do more traveling or put the money directly in my savings account for unforeseen expenses (and the occasional splurge). I also don’t have the time anymore to scour Ebay or Vestiaire Collective for that one illusive, perfect item. Maybe that’s just how it is and your priorities change over time. It would be nice to find a balance though as I still enjoy fashion.

I still stand behind the idea of the 5 Piece French Wardrobe. It has saved me a lot of money and I have made less regrettable purchases than I used to. So I’m not giving up and I will try to find that balance. I will start with an assessment and purge of my wardrobe soon. I would love to see what makes the cut and if it will create any holes that need to be filled and how I will go about that. Because even though we like to fool ourselves into believing that something as the perfect wardrobe exists, it’s really an ongoing process which is never finished.

5 piece french wardrobe overview 2016

If you’re a fairly new reader, you probably don’t know that I have been planning my purchases according to the 5 piece French wardrobe for many years now (I wrote about it here when I just started blogging). It has proven to be an excellent way of keeping my spending habits under control and to be honest, I even enjoy the process of carefully selecting new additions to my wardrobe. But I have to admit, I’m not looking forward to writing this years 5 piece French wardrobe overview post because the list of purchases seems never-ending. However, the best remedy to overspending and mindless consumption is to come clean and be honest (which seems a rare thing on blogs nowadays. It’s mostly about presenting a perfect image). So here goes.

Main goal of 2016

Since 2010/2011 I have been building my wardrobe according to this principle. I was finally able to splurge on the occasional designer item when I kept my spending habits in check. The excitement of that one Acne Studios cardigan that I bought on sale was much more fulfilling than those three bags of H&M goodies that I used to come home with. As the years passed, I was buying less and less and finally my main goal for 2016 was to limit my purchases to ten pieces including basics and replacements. But unfortunately 2016 came with a few struggles…

5 piece French wardrobe struggles

The main reason I struggled with the 5PFW was my weight loss. For years I knew I was slightly overweight but it wasn’t until May that I actively started to work on it. I dropped three pants sizes and didn’t have much choice but to spend money on new clothes. The process of losing weight also meant I didn’t want to invest a lot of money on things I needed because chances were they weren’t going to fit me in the long run. So instead of following my resolution to only buy into slow fashion, I ended up at Zara etc. I also felt happy with my progress and I guess buying things felt like a new start. I’m not proud of it but this way I was able to bridge the gap between my old situation and the new in an affordable way and quickly build a (temporary) wardrobe.

Basics and replacements
Topshop Jamie skinny jeans
&Other Stories silk blouse
Samsoe & Samsoe silk camisole
Massimo Dutti chelsea boots

5 piece purchases
A.P.C. wool Polska scarf
Adidas Stan Smith sneakers
Mango high waisted linen trousers
Isabel Marant trench coat

The first six months started off pretty well as usual. In January I bought two items on sale that I had my eyes on for quite a while; a black A.P.C. wool scarf and a pair of black leather chelsea boots. Both are currently on rotation again now that it’s winter. The Stan Smith sneakers are a variation on the ones that I usually wear. To be honest, I go through them at the same pace Taylor Swift goes through men but what can I say, they’re super comfortable. The &Other Stories silk blouse is a replacement because I had an accident with the previous one (a large fat stain that was sadly impossible to remove). This is one of my go-to options whenever I don’t have time to iron.

The camisole and linen trousers are the result of my summer wardrobe planning post. I still wear the former underneath sweaters and blouses but the trousers won’t come out until summer (will need to get those altered). The Isabel Marant trench coat is safely hanging in my closet as a backup for my current one. I don’t usually buy the same thing twice but it seemed like a smart move when I found it on Vestiaire Collective in mint condition because it’s from the 2010 collection and I have yet to come across another trench coat that fits me so well.

5 piece purchases
H&M wool blazer
Zara rain coat
Isabel Marant Deyissa boots
Zara star body
H&M cashmere jumper
Asos jumpsuit

Now onto the second half of last year. At this point I was in desperate need of new, well-fitting clothes. Hence the numerous pairs of trousers and tops.  A rain coat was on my list for quite a while but it’s one of those things you never get around to actually buy. But apparantly these were pretty trendy last year and I managed to find one that doesn’t make me look like a grandma. It immediately proved itself useful when I visited the Lowlands festival the day after I purchased it.

Two things that are quite out of the ordinary for me are the star printed body and jumpsuit. Both were bought for special occasions; the body for Christmas and the jumpsuit for my wedding. Yes, you read that right. I got married in August and I could’t see myself getting married in a dress. So I opted for a chic black jumpsuit instead. And last but not least, the Isabel Marant Deyissa boots. I was already looking into the Deyis boots last year but I couldn’t get over the brown heel. So when they released an all black pair, I decided to go for it. My shoe size sells out pretty quick and I didn’t want to take the risk of them selling out. To compensate for the number of shoes bought, I plan to sell some older pairs that I no longer wear but are still in good condition.

Final thoughts on the 5 piece French wardrobe

I will continue the 5 piece French wardrobe approach when it comes to shopping and wardrobe building, albeit a lot more strict than last year. I would still like to lose some extra pounds but that most likely won’t influence my current wardrobe. In fact, my wardrobe has even grown a bit as I’m able to fit some older things that I held onto like an Isabel Marant jacket that I bought on Ebay a few years ago. I’m pleased to see my style has remained cohesive over the years. I’m able to easily mix newly acquired items with older things that I haven’t worn for a long time. Although the things that I bought last year pretty much function as a wardrobe on its own. So I’m looking to sell quite a few things that have either become too large or are no longer pieces of interest.

Now that I feel happier in my skin, I do feel like experimenting a little more. Nothing too crazy but looking back on the last two to three years I do notice a pattern of wanting to dress safe and boring, mainly to go unnoticed. So in conclusion, I didn’t do so well regarding the 5 piece French wardrobe but mentally and physically I’m doing great. Therefore I’m not going to be too hard on myself (which is quite surprising coming from me, haha) and will just look forward to another year of wardrobe planning. I hope you guys will stick with me throughout the process.

diamonds-by-the-yard-bracelet-tiffany-co

I hadn’t worn my silver diamonds-by-the-yard bracelet for months, because I needed to get it cleaned. So I brought it to Tiffany & Co a couple of weeks ago, not only for a thorough cleaning session but also to have it shortened a little because I already lost it once at work when it got caught on my coat. Several heart attacks later, I finally found it under my desk with a broken clasp. It is one of the first gifts that I bought for myself in order to celebrate something. Because why not treat yourself every once in a while?

I love it when things that I bought in the past are reminders of certain accomplishments or events. Like the aforementioned bracelet; I bought it when I was first offered my job at the museum. It was only for a couple of months at that time, but it was everything I had been working up to at that point after years of studying. As a matter of fact, six months prior I had finished my last temporary freelance job and I was getting pretty anxious because finding a job in the cultural sector is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

From that point on, I allowed myself to buy something nice every time my contract was renewed. The Balenciaga bag and boots, the Céline trio bag are all the result of hard work. And sure, they’re also part of my 5 piece French wardrobe adventure which allows me to invest in a few quality pieces every season, but linking a purchase to an important or happy event makes it even more special. Every time I look down to my wrist and I see that bracelet, I feel the same sense of excitement that I felt when I landed that job.

Have you ever bought something to remind yourself of a special occasion?

hair-pin

According to both my hairdressers, I am blessed with very easy hair. And I suppose they’re right. Thank god actually, because I’d rather spend another 10 more minutes in bed than blowdrying my hair. Just a quick shower and I’m out the door with wet hair. When I arrive at work, it’s dry and there’s always someone asking me if I went to the hairdresser again. Uh no, I washed it?

But speaking of details, I’m wearing my new silk blouse by & Other Stories. I decided to send the H&M blouse back. The washed black colour was beautiful, but the fit wasn’t at all flattering; very square cut and insanely wide. A couple of weeks back I tried the & Other Stories blouse and was pleasantly surprised. Only to find a small snag in one of the front panels and so I left crying and empty handed. But luckily they restock every once in a while and I found one in my size just last week. Feels a bit strange though, to be wearing something that isn’t black, white or grey. How daring of me, right? I even added a Celine-esque hairpin to complete the picture.

Now that I crossed that silk blouse of my list, I do need to remind myself to slow down a little. It was only a little over a week ago that I posted my wish list for fall/winter and I’m already hunting down the next item. This is why I both love and hate the end of the year. It’s my favourite time to shop, because I’m a sucker for coats, knits etc. but I also tend to get a little carried away. So a small confession from my side: after all of these years living by those 5 piece French wardrobe rules, it’s still hard occassionaly.
